"Buddy"

Buddy is a 8 year old, male Weimeraner that had a spinal cord tumor removed in the end of Januarary. His owners brought him to the Canine Rehab Center a few days after surgery and at that time Buddy could not support weight on any of his limbs. His owners decided to leave him at our facility due to his need for intensive rehab and nursing care. Initially Buddy's rehab consisted of frequent turning, expressing his urinary bladder, passive range of motion and massage of each limb. We would also stand him up using support slings to encourage Buddy to begin weight bearing. When put into the pool with a lifejacket on, Buddy could swim using all of his legs, although he tired quickly. Eventually Buddy began to regain bladder control and strength in his limbs, with the left front and rear legs recovering much faster than the right side. We introduced the underwater treadmill in the middle of February and soon after Buddy was walking on his own with only a little help from a rear sling. By the end of February, only one month after his surgery, Buddy was walking with no help from his owners! He continued to come to the Canine Rehab Center for recreational swims throughout the winter to maintain his muscle mass. Through hard work on his part and very dedicated owners, Buddy was able to recover from his surgery to lead a normal, happy life!
